Healthy Diet
What does a healthy diet mean? With so many different diet types and fitness regimes out there, it seems silly that we can even use the term ‘healthy diet’ without seeming flip. Healthy diet is not meant to be a derogatory or sarcastic term; it’s important that we all get, have, implement, maintain, and enjoy a healthy diet; to get there for us all is a journey all it’s own.
To start, let’s all get real: the healthy diet pyramid that was on the walls of most of our elementary school classrooms and taught in middle school health class, isn’t always what’s put into practice in our 21st century lives. We’re busy; we eat on the go, we skip breakfast, lunch, dinner; we eat at odd hours; we work odd hours; the old adage of our work days and our internal clocks rising and falling with the sun is pretty outdated. As our knowledge of persons reactions to foods grows and as we all come into out own about what we enjoy and what we don’t, we realize that following the rule of the pyramid isn’t always efficient. But, for the vexed dieter, the pyramid does offer some guide posts to bounce our food choices off of and should be referenced for historically what a healthy diet means.
Healthy diets for teenagers can often be a good place to start for adults. Just cut in half. Teens need a high caloric intake as they’re growing and need more food; but the need for nutrients remains.
Athletes actually tend to eat a lot like teenagers, as having to keep up their physical performance, whether it is running downfield or checking an opponent, most pro sports prefer the muscularity over svelte athleticism. Of course the rules change slightly for an Olympic diver for instance or a gymnast as they need to keep in shape and not just bulk up.
